Since arrival to UK shores in the 1840’s the diatonic accordion or melodeon as it later became known was a keen favourite of the working classes at the turn of the century. In later times it has developed into an important traditional instrument with many noteable players like John Kirkpatrick, John Spiers, Andy Cutting and Chris Parkinson, to name but a few who are constantly pushing the melodeon into un chartered waters. The melodeon is now a first choice instrument for céilidh bands playing traditional Irish and Scottish Music on melodeon, Barn Dance Bands who play a variety of dance music on the melodeon and not to forget the ever present Morris Dance movement.
