DEMONSTRATION UNIT IN SHOP NOW!!!
If you’d told me yesterday that I¹d enjoy playing an electronic melodeon, I’d have pulled your ears off and fed them to a tone-deaf fruit bat. But now I’ve tried one, I’ll happily eat them myself. I’ll be quite honest – I really wanted to hate this. The idea of a synth in melodeon format is the kind of thing that makes me break out in hives, but the trouble is, this new Roland is strangely compelling. I¹ll go further it's FUN. By the bucket load.
First of all, being electronic it’s light, so the larger size isn’t a problem and Roland have fitted a LOT into this box. It’s a 3 row 18 bass so you can set it up to play anything from one row/organetto styles all the way through to big continental style layouts. And you can tell it what layout you want ADG, GCF, BCC#, D/G, C/F, G/C, accidentals, low notes, custom layouts you name it. The Instrument will store a dozen layouts in memory at any time so you can switch between systems at the touch of a button, even mid tune if you wish!
You can play it through headphones so you don’t have to disturb others while practicing, or you can plug it straight into a P.A. No more messing about with microphones, feedback etc. And, it doesn’t have to sound like a melodeon. Being a MIDI instrument, you can plug it into whatever sound module you like, but the onboard sounds give you a variety of accordion family sounds, piano, sax, clarinet, even banjo! A single press of a button switches some fairly respectable percussion sounds on which synchronise with the bass and chords.
Essentially, this is a hugely versatile instrument that I’ve only just begun to play with as a controller alone it’s got enormous possibilities. There is so much potential here for doing things that are simply impossible on a conventional melodeon, and above all, it’s fun! - I want one. Swap it for a fruitbat?
